WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David says his office is using the full resources of law enforcement personnel to go after verified gang members, including Garry Hines.
“I want to know why my bond is a million dollars out of everybody that comes through here,” said Hines.
Hines will continue to sit behind bars facing several charges including 1st degree murder and 11 counts for selling and delivering heroin.
"On a first degree murder case it’s generally unusual for that person to make bond,” said James Payne, WWAY Legal Expert.
Hines was out on a 300,000 bond, before being arrested on Wednesday.
Something he himself mocked on his Facebook page.
Payne says there is a lot to review when determining someone’s potential bond.
"The first thing the court has to consider is the strength of the evidence against the defendant," said Payne.
Hines says his family has now become targets of the Wilmington Police Department.
“They're putting out bad things about we're the city’s two worst offenders and my record is the cleanest out of all of my brothers and sisters," said Hines.
District Attorney Ben David does not agree.
"That's not targeting. That is using the most effective resources we have to go after the people we regard as committing the worst offenses," said David.
David says everyone is presumed innocent and that Hines will have the right to a fair trial.
"But, what you don't have a right to do is to commit crimes and if you are charged with committing new offenses while you are out on pre-trial release that's absolutely a factor," said David.
Hines was in court Thursday and asked for a bond reduction, but his request was denied.
Hines is expected to stand trial in December for the death of 23-year-old Cornelius Blanks.
